Selling is overcoming negatives, not just stating positives

There is a “one best interview question’ which should be asked by every candidate in every interview.

At the end of an interview, you need to find out how you did in the interview. “Hard sell” proponents suggest asking the question “is there any reason you would not offer me the job?” or “will I be asked back for the next round of interviews?” Both these questions are “sales close” questions and easily avoided by the interviewer by simply saying, “We have more candidates to interview before we can make that decision”. Even if they like you, avoiding the answer is a prudent response just in case subsequent candidates are better suited to the job. (more…)

Over the course of my career, I’ve worked with several foreign nationals who are writing their first America resume. “You don’t want to put a picture on your resume,” I start by saying. “Leave off your date of birth, too. Also whether you are married or not.” I’m so used to American resumes—and not the ways of European CVs–always surprised when the client says, “Really? (more…)

dream jobHere at Career Successions, you may hear the term “career transition” pretty often. We are referring to those who have a career – whether you are fresh out of college and just starting out on your workforce-path or have been working in the same industry or job for ten years, twenty years, or more – and are in a place to change careers.

There are many reasons to want – or need – to make a career change, even if you’ve been trudging along the same path for decades. You may be dissatisfied with the practical aspects of your career such as your boss, your pay, or the lack of opportunities to move up in the company. Perhaps you’re feeling tired, bored, or passion-less at work. Maybe you’ve found yourself working in a non-sustainable industry or one that is being replaced as technology advances. It could just be time for something new! (more…)

What is an Executive Recruiter?

Executive Recruiters (often called Management Recruiters or “headhunters”) are hired by companies to fill jobs that, in most cases never get advertised elsewhere. They are one of the principal elements of the so called “hidden job market.” There are more than 15,000 executive recruiting offices across the country, many employing multiple recruiters. Typically, recruiters work on mid-level and top level assignments. Employment agencies work on lower-level jobs. (more…)

job referencesReferences are a vital piece of your resume or job application, and yet they often come as an afterthought. Often tacked onto the end of a resume of CV, many of us don’t put much thought into our references – an old boss, a professor, a co-worker – especially after they’ve been added to the list. Your references are your responsibility, and can potentially make or break your chance at the big job. (more…)

Obviously, I’m a huge fan of using social media for your career. But I also recognize that not everyone is, and that we all have preferences for how we start using it. It’s like learning to ride a bike: some parents and children start with training wheels; other parents give a brief demo, hold on to the back of the bike for a bit, and then let their kids go. My parents fell into the latter group and let me fall a few times. I had a few scrapes, but then I was off and riding around the block. (more…)

More Than Words: Interview Body Language July 8, 2010

interivew body languageAs we’ve said before, landing a job interview is no easy task, especially when the economic environment means that job competition is up and actual hiring is down.  So let us here at Career Successions take one more step in preparing you for the face-to-face.

Of course you know that everything you say in an interview is of the utmost importance, but what do may be equally as important. According to Wharton University, human beings use all five senses to take in information from the world around them. Of those five senses, retention of information passed on verbally only accounts for about 11% of retention, while visual information accounts for a whopping 51% of information retention! Countless studies have shown that body language accounts for more than half of how we relay messages to one another, while words get less than 10%. That said, you can see how what you do carries its own level of significance. (more…)

What Not to Wear … June 18, 2010

interview tipsMost of us have seen the hit television show, “What Not to Wear.” If you haven’t, the premise of the show is that two wardrobe experts, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, interrupt the lives of nation-wide fashion offenders, ambush style, of course, fly them back to New York City, and make them over in a whirlwind of a week. Along the way, both hosts offer an impressive amount of fashion advice for the rest of us, as well as tips to keep their current ‘ward’ in line long after they leave the big apple.

Here at Career Successions, we rarely make it our business to keep anyone in line, or to give out fashion advice, for that matter, but we do know a little something about what you should – and should not – wear to a job interview. Landing an interview is a big deal; we’ve mentioned it before – in the current economic environment, there is seemingly insurmountable competition for every position, and being fortunate (or qualified) enough to make it to the stage of an in-person interview is no small matter! That said, we don’t want to see you miss your chance at landing the job of your dreams for something as trivial as your appearance. (more…)

interview tipsInterview Follow-Up Steps for Success
By: Ford R. Meyers, Career Successions expert

My clients often express frustration after they’ve completed their interviews for a position they want. The common complaints include, “Why doesn’t the company call me back?” or “I feel like I have no power; all I can do is wait for an answer,” or “Can’t I do anything to make the employer say YES?”

After working as a top-level Career Consultant for many years, and helping thousands of clients through the “interview maze,” here is what I can tell you: There is no “secret trick” or “magic bullet” that will get the employer to offer you the job! In fact, you’re probably already doing most of the right things in this process.

You’ll be happy to know, however, that there are some strategies you can use to INFLUENCE the employer’s decision and FINESSE the process. Changing many of your small actions and approaches can actually make a big difference in the outcome of your interviews. (more…)
